Ali Tehami
Founder - Director of Design & Construction Automation
Melbourne, Australia & Dubai, UAE
Architect and AEC digital strategist with 14+ years at the forefront of computational design, automation, and digital construction innovation. Founder of GIRIH X, transforming how products, facades, and infrastructure are designed, specified, and built through intelligent automation and industry-first BIM workflows. His portfolio spans award-winning Revit plugins, automated fabrication-ready BIM pipelines, and strategic deployment of cloud-based data systems across Australia, Middle East, and Europe. He specialises in bridging the worlds of architecture, software engineering, and manufacturing: translating complex challenges into scalable, impactful solutions. Across his international career, Ali has delivered 70+ projects at Woods Bagot's Dubai and Melbourne studios, spanning hospitality, workplace, retail, mixed-use, residential, transport, aviation, education, healthcare, masterplanning and high-rise. Landmark contributions include Bluewaters and Dubai Eye, Doha Metro, CityWalk Dubai, Melbourne Connect, Western Sydney Airport, and Amazon PenPlace in Virginia. As Computational Design Lead at Resolve Insight, he founded the Computational Design unit and helped scale the business from 3 to 30 people, leading R&D into AECO automation, cloud apps, and SaaS configurators. His specialist areas include algorithmic design, computational BIM, complex geometry rationalisation, facade automation, embodied carbon analytics, and bespoke product digitisation pipelines.
Getting to Know Ali
Walk us through a typical day at GIRIH X…
Every morning kicks off with a strong coffee (non-negotiable) and then it's straight into syncing with the team across time zones. We'll review active sprints, troubleshoot technical blockers, and carve out space to experiment with new ideas. The best part of my day is when a conversation with a client or a teammate sparks an unexpected approach to a problem nobody thought was solvable. That energy is what keeps GIRIH X moving forward.
What drives your passion for this work?
At its core, I love untangling complexity. The AEC industry is full of deeply entrenched workflows that haven't evolved in decades, and there's something incredibly rewarding about reimagining those processes through code and automation. Seeing a client realise they can achieve in hours what used to take weeks, that moment of disbelief turning into excitement, is genuinely addictive. It reminds me why I started GIRIH X in the first place.
What kind of work excites you the most?
The messier the challenge, the more I enjoy it. I'm drawn to projects where conventional methods have hit a wall: whether it's automating facade fabrication workflows for complex geometries, building plugins that compress months of documentation into days, or deploying cloud-based tracking systems across live construction sites. The common thread is always the same: turning real-world friction into elegant, scalable digital solutions.
How do you recharge outside of work?
Family time is everything: road trips across regional Australia, discovering tucked-away coffee spots, and just being present with the people I care about. I'm also a perpetual student; I'll dive into emerging tech rabbit holes on weekends and channel that curiosity back into teaching at Swinburne. Giving the next generation of architects and engineers a head start on computational thinking is something I find deeply fulfilling.
