Getting to Know Ali

Q

Walk us through a typical day at GIRIH X…

Every morning kicks off with a strong coffee (non-negotiable) and then it's straight into syncing with the team across time zones. We'll review active sprints, troubleshoot technical blockers, and carve out space to experiment with new ideas. The best part of my day is when a conversation with a client or a teammate sparks an unexpected approach to a problem nobody thought was solvable. That energy is what keeps GIRIH X moving forward.

Q

What drives your passion for this work?

At its core, I love untangling complexity. The AEC industry is full of deeply entrenched workflows that haven't evolved in decades, and there's something incredibly rewarding about reimagining those processes through code and automation. Seeing a client realise they can achieve in hours what used to take weeks, that moment of disbelief turning into excitement, is genuinely addictive. It reminds me why I started GIRIH X in the first place.

Q

What kind of work excites you the most?

The messier the challenge, the more I enjoy it. I'm drawn to projects where conventional methods have hit a wall: whether it's automating facade fabrication workflows for complex geometries, building plugins that compress months of documentation into days, or deploying cloud-based tracking systems across live construction sites. The common thread is always the same: turning real-world friction into elegant, scalable digital solutions.

Q

How do you recharge outside of work?

Family time is everything: road trips across regional Australia, discovering tucked-away coffee spots, and just being present with the people I care about. I'm also a perpetual student; I'll dive into emerging tech rabbit holes on weekends and channel that curiosity back into teaching at Swinburne. Giving the next generation of architects and engineers a head start on computational thinking is something I find deeply fulfilling.

Mark Datiles

Mark Datiles

Co-Founder - Director of BIM & Digital Engineering

Melbourne, Australia

Mark delivers BIM and digital engineering outcomes across the AEC sector, specialising in advanced modelling, asset development, and automation-driven workflows across the AEC sector. Safeguards programme certainty and minimises onsite remediation through proactive coordination and model management. With 14+ years across architectural design, BIM management, computational design, and digital fabrication, Mark's career began in residential and commercial documentation at Innovative Space Design, Taylors, and Point Architects, before leading BIM content and coordination at Resolve Insight on tier-one infrastructure: NextDC and Microsoft Data Centres, Arts Centre Melbourne's Arts Precinct Transformation, Caulfield Racecourse Redevelopment, and Reece Group's family library and 'Imagin3D' platform. He brings rare end-to-end experience: from heritage restoration documentation to enterprise data centre coordination, with deep expertise in template development, model federation, clash detection, CDE governance, BEP development, parametric Revit families, and team training.

Getting to Know Mark

Q

What drew you to BIM and digital engineering?

I've always been fascinated by the intersection of design and technology. Starting out in architectural documentation, I saw first-hand how much time was lost to manual coordination and rework. That frustration became my motivation and I wanted to find smarter ways to deliver projects. BIM gave me the tools to bridge the gap between design intent and built reality, and I haven't looked back since.

Q

What does a typical day look like for you at GIRIH X?

The variety of the role is what makes it so engaging. My focus shifts between looking at the development of content libraries, facilitating complex coordination workshops, and implementing project-specific workflows. A significant part of my role involves overseeing the team and ensuring our digital engineering frameworks are both robust and consistently applied. I also lead the development of the automation tools and refined processes that drive our delivery speed and technical reliability.

Q

What kind of projects get you most excited?

Complex projects with genuine engineering challenges; infrastructure and large-scale developments. There's real value in coordinating complex projects by applying disciplined digital engineering and automation to bring clarity to the process. When digital engineering is done properly, you see it on site: minimal rework, fewer RFIs, and a smoother delivery. That's the outcome we work towards.

Q

What do you enjoy outside of work?

I find my best work is fueled by a healthy life away from the screen. Whether I’m with my family, staying active, or recharging in the ocean, these moments provide the balance necessary for high-level problem solving. I also dedicate time to teaching as a sessional academic at Swinburne. Mentoring future contributors to the AEC sector not only allows me to give back to the profession but ensures I stay at the forefront of emerging industry trends.
